Making Tough Decisions SUCKS

We have all been in that extremely uncomfortable tight space. The one where we are getting pulled in what seems like a million different directions, with no logical resolve in sight. We are faced with that overwhelming tough decision that we never thought we would face, but it's here now and we don't know what to do with it. Should I accept this new job? Should I branch out on my own and be an entrepreneur? Should I end this relationship? Should I move away from home? Should I continue my education? The list can go on and on and on because unfortunately, as adults, we deal with a lot of tough decisions that sometimes seriously make me want to go back to being a kid again.

The reality is that hard decision-making is never an easy process. No matter how much of a strong person you think you are, just wait until you're faced with a life changing decision. Let me tell you guys, sometimes I struggle.. like really struggle when it comes down to making tough decisions. Sometimes I can't even wrap my mind around consequences of a certain choice and I even obsess over whether or not the decision I ultimately made was the best one for me at the time. If this sounds like you too, don't worry about it love. It happens. I'm human and so are you, and we just have to face that while making difficult decisions is something that has to happen in order to move us forward through life, we struggle with it a bit, but I have some methods I use to help me not struggle as much, and I hope it can help you too.

Here are a few ways I've come up with to help with the tough decision-making process:

  •  Pray About It
This is something that is majorly important in the decision making process for me. If I am torn in a million different directions, I seek God first because I know if anything, he will give me calm and peace of mind I need to make a sound decision. A lot of times, I have been faced with some crazy decisions I needed to make and I really didn't know where to start at all. I would pray about it, go to sleep, and some how, some way, God would throw something in my path or make a different type of thought come into my head where I could just look up, smile, and say "Thanks God, I know that was you!".
  • Seek Advice
We all know that at the end of the day, the decision you make is ultimately up to you, however, seeking advice from someone you love and trust could never hurt. That doesn't mean you have to tell them the entire situation or do exactly what they say to do, but it does give you another perspective of what you're dealing with and it may help you to see things in a new light. We all need that sometimes. Be careful with this one though, you don't want to seek advice from too many sources because it could confuse you. Too many noses in your pot can cause more harm than good. Stick to one or two people you trust.
  • Take Your Own Advice
If you were helping a friend through this situation, what would you tell them? It can be so easy sometimes to give advice, but yet so hard for us to apply it to our own lives and situations. I've had to do this many times. I enjoy giving advice to my friends, but that doesn't mean it's easy for me to do what I'm telling them to do. It's kind of like when your parents or elders say "Do as I say, not what I do", and you're sitting there confused like what do you mean? It makes perfect sense now though and I'm not saying I necessarily agree with that, but we do that in many situations. We know what's right, but sometimes act off of emotion and do the wrong thing. So, sit down, think about what you would say to a friend and then follow your own advice. Hopefully, you'd be giving out good, helpful advice to a friend anyway, right? :)
  • Sleep On It
Don't make a rash decision based off of emotion. Your short term emotions get in the way of making good decisions. If you need to take a day or two to think it over and time permits, do it. You need to weigh out all of the pros and cons of your situation before you make a decision you may one day regret. This reminds me of the days when I would get into little petty arguments with my friends. I would always feel a rush of emotions and act on it in the moment. I'd go home and think about what had happened, and my comebacks would be so much BETTER once I had slept on it. Gosh, I used to hate that! Haha So give your brain time to soak it in before you jump.
  • Trust Your Gut
At the end of the day, making tough decisions always ultimately comes down to this. You have to trust your gut. This is a big one I'm working on. I know sometimes what my heart is telling me to do, but my fear of hurting someone's feelings or regret later clouds over me so thick. This goes into my struggles of needing validation from others. Like I said, I'm a work in progress and I'm okay with that. Trusting your gut is important and when you trust your gut, you're completely owning your actions which is one of the most adult thing you can do.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now these things help me, so hopefully they will help you too. Rome wasn't built in a day, so neither will your control over making tough decisions. It's all about growth and progress people. I'm in this with you saying that I struggle too, so we can struggle together and get better at it together. :)
